Deskripsi
Kompas.com was a pioneer of online media in Indonesia, launching on the Internet on September 14, 1995, under the name Kompas Online.
Initially, Kompas Online (or KOL) accessed via the address kompas.co.id simply displayed a digital replica of the Harian Kompas newspaper edition published that day.
The goal was to serve Kompas readers in locations that were difficult for the newspaper’s distribution network to reach. With the advent of Kompas Online, readers particularly those in Eastern Indonesia and abroad could enjoy the day’s edition of Kompas immediately, without the usual wait of several days.
Subsequently, to enhance service quality, the Kompas Online address was changed to www.kompas.com in early 1996. This new address helped Kompas Online gain increasing popularity among loyal Kompas readers overseas.
Recognizing the immense potential of the digital world, Kompas Online was developed into a standalone business unit under the banner of PT Kompas Cyber Media (KCM) on August 6, 1998. From that point on, the service became better known as KCM. During this era, KCM visitors no longer received merely a replica of the Kompas daily; they also gained access to real-time updates on breaking news throughout the day.
KCM’s visitor numbers surged alongside the growth of Internet usage in Indonesia. Accessing information online has since become an integral part of our daily lives, and the digital landscape continues to evolve. KCM, too, has adapted and transformed.
On May 29, 2008, the news portal rebranded itself as Kompas.com, harking back to the Kompas brand—long recognized for delivering journalism that provides meaning. News channels were expanded, and news output was increased to ensure readers received up-to-date and timely information. The rebranding of Kompas.com aims to assert the news portal’s position as a benchmark for quality journalism amidst a flood of information of questionable veracity.
